Not the legendary fighting force at play, but the rather less enticingly named Surfers Against Sewage, a self-explanatory environmental group, which is hosting an awareness-raising free festival in Newquay from Thursday (27 Aug). As well as the British Surfing Association National Championship, other events centre around this year's Afro-Caribbean theme, and include steel and reggae bands, limbo-dancing, children's entertainers and a carnival procession. Surf clothing and Caribbean cuisine will be on sale and other delights include the appearance of a promised celebrity surf team. Brace yourselves - last year's was headed by Andrew Ridgely.
