5 September: The Farrelly brothers have proved themselves to be masters of the gross-out comedy with movies like Dumb and Dumber, and Kingpin, but the bodily fluids and comical injuries paraded in their new movie, There's Something About Mary (right), blur the line between laughter and peristalsis. Ben Stiller is the geek who botches a date with Cameron Diaz during a mishap with his trouser zip. Years later, he hires a seedy detective (Matt Dillon) to track her down. Also: Jacques Rivette's methodical mystery Secret Defense.

18 September: Lethal Weapon 4 hits the screen having done big business in the US, which doesn't come as a surprise. Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Rene Russo and Joe Pesci return for another bout of action-comedy to take on the Triads. For unadventurous cinemagoers.

Also: Love is the Devil, John Maybury's acclaimed film about Francis Bacon (played by Derek Jacobi).

Later: Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow star in the Warner Bros thriller, Perfect Murder, which is loosely based on Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder. Meanwhile Ken Loach's My Name is Joe marks a comeback after the disappointing Carla's Song.
