Film of the week: Blue in the Face

Director Wayne Wang, writer Paul Auster and actor Harvey Keitel knocked together this improvised series of skits and observations on Brooklyn life when they were through shooting Smoke together, and had a week to spare. Contrary to the self-indulgence that this might suggest, Blue in the Face is every bit as winning as its sister film, enlivened by some dotty star cameos: Roseanne, Madonna, Lou Reed, Lily Tomlin as a plaid- clad down-and-out, Michael J Fox off his trolley and, best of all, Jim Jarmusch eloquently debating the joys of smoking.
