This week we discover whether Gus Van Sant's (almost) shot-for- shot colour remake of Psycho (above) was really the bold experiment the director claims, or just a cynical bid by Universal to score a much-needed hit. Chances are, it's a bit of both. The film has divided critics in America (where Hitchcock's Psycho was chosen by the American Film Institute for its list of the 100 most important American movies), though almost everyone agrees it's no cheap rip-off. Whatever this Psycho's merits, there's no doubt that it will give cinephiles plenty to discuss in the pub afterwards. And if Van Sant's remake doesn't scare them, then rumours that Demi Moore may play the Wicked Witch of the West in a remake of The Wizard of Oz, certainly should.
