Three-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams ( Junebug, Doubt, The Fighter) has been cast in the upcoming redo of Superman as the iconic Lois Lane, Clark Kent's fellow journalist.

Adams joins Henry Cavill ( Stardust), who plays Superman and Clark Kent, and Diane Lane ( Secretariat) and Kevin Costner ( The Upside of Anger) as Kent's adoptive earth parents, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Zack Snyder ( Sucker Punch, Legend of the Guardians, 300) who will direct Superman: Man of Steel, is seeking a contemporary appeal. "What's important to us is making him relevant and real and making him empathetic to today's audience," he told the Los Angeles Times. "That applies to Lois as well. She has to be in the same universe as him."

Actresses considered in the search for Lois were rumored to be Twilight Saga's Kristen Stewart, Rachel McAdams ( Iron Man), Jessica Biel ( Valentine's Day), Dianna Agron ( Glee) and Olivia Wilde ( Tron: Legacy).

Other actresses who have played Lois Lane in previous adaptations include Margot Kidder (1978-83), Kate Bosworth (2006), and Teri Hatcher ( Desperate Housewives) on TV (1993-97).

Adams will next be seen in The Muppets with Jason Segel ( I Love You, Man) and the Jack Kerouac adaptation On the Road with Viggo Mortensen, Garrett Hedlund ( Tron: Legacy) and Kristen Stewart ( The Twilight Saga).

Superman: Man of Steel is scheduled for a December 2012 release.
