Baftas 2015: Stephen Fry lauds Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin

Video: The Bafta host said he wanted to praise a less well-known film among this year's nominations

While this year's Bafta nominations include the obvious big films such as The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game, the awards' host, Stephen Fry, has said he likes to praise the smaller films that have been nominated.

Speaking to London Live after he and actor Samuel Claflin announced the 2015 nominations list, Fry was asked whether he had a favourite film this year.

"Well, what I tend to do in a scattergun way is praise anything, which of course is greasy and pointless and nobody believes me," he replied.

Yet the star of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies said that he often preferred to highlight a small film that he "particularly enjoyed or had a particular effect on me."

He highlighted British film 71 as well as Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin, a film loosely based on a novel with the same name by Michael Faber and starring Scarlett Johansson.

Speaking about Glazer's movie, he said, "Under the Skin...is a very extraordinary film...most unusual and very, very achieved, very beautifully directed, wonderful cinematography, amazing sound scape. Everything about it was unusual and different and low budget and yet brilliantly cinematic. So I'm very happy to praise that above more obvious ones because it needs the attention, I think."

Grand Budapest Hotel won the most nominations, scooping 11 nods including best film and best director for Wes Anderson.

The Theory of Everything won ten nominations and The Imitation Game was given a total of nine nods. Birdman also has ten nominations. Boyhood and Whiplash are each nominated five times. Mr. Turner, Nightcrawler and Interstellar received four nominations and Pride has three nods.
