Viewers are more used to seeing her as above stairs in Downton Abbey but in the latest trailer for new film Madame Bovary, shows a different side to actress Laura Carmichael.

Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith Crawley in popular ITV series Downton Abbey, takes up a role below stairs in a new trailer for the adaption of Gustave Flaubert’s 1856 tragic classic.

The 28-year-old will star alongside a host of big Hollywood names, including Mia Wasikowska – who takes the title role of Madame Bovary – as well as Paul Giametti, Ezra Miller and Rhys Ifans.

The adaption of Flaubert’s tragedy follows Emma as she marries Dr Bovary and leaves her parent’s pig farm in hope of a better life.

Besieged by temptation, and trapped in a loveless marriage, she embarks on a number of affairs and is slowly trapped by debt.

Directed by Sophie Barthes, and with an adapted screenplay by Felipe Marino, the film is the latest outside venture from the cast of Downton Abbey.
