With vampires and zombies all the rage among supernatural horror films, it appears the exorcism theme is being exhumed as a storyline with three films in the works.
Anthony Hopkins will star in The Rite, portraying a Vatican exorcist and his protégé whose faith is tested by demonic forces. Loosely based on the book The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist, by Matt Baglio, it will be directed by Swedish director Mikael Hafstrom. Hopkins is currently in production on Marvel Comic's Thor.
Another exorcism film, tentatively titled The Haunted Boy, is based on the book The Real Story Behind The Exorcist: A Study of the Haunted Boy and Other True-Life Horror Legends by Mark Opsasnick, about the tales that inspired the original book and William Friedkin's infamous 1973 movie The Exorcist. This film is in lieu of rebooting the original.
After premiering at the SXSW Film Festival, The Last Exorcism, produced by actor Eli Roth (Inglorious Basterds) and directed by German filmmaker Daniel Stamm, is set for theatrical release August 27. The story follows a troubled evangelical minister who agrees to allow his final exorcism to be filmed as a documentary.
