This autumn, a series of premier film festivals around the world will take place in September, from Venice to Toronto to New York with an impressive lineup of films. Also in September a series of smaller fests occur with top-flight guests of honor, attracting attendees.
The tributes include directors, writers and actors at the following events:
The 34th Montreal World Film Festival, August 26-September 6, in Quebec, Canada will host French actor Gérard Depardieu, who will give a master class on cinema. His perspective includes working with directors such as Claude Chabrol, Peter Handke, Barbet Schroeder, Ridley Scott, François Truffaut, Andrzej Wajda, and Peter Weir.

The 37th Telluride Film Festival, presented by the US's National Film Preserve, announced the Guest Director will be author Michael Ondaatje. Best-known for his novel The English Patient, he has made documentaries and edited the book The Conversations: Walter Murch & the Art of Editing Film. He will present a selection of hand-picked films at the Colorado festival, September 3-6.
The film program at Telluride is not revealed until attendees arrive. In the past, screenings have included Juno, The Lives of Others, Brokeback Mountain and Blue Velvet. Also a surprise will be three honorees. They have previously included Francis Ford Coppola, Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Penelope Cruz.

The 58th San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain, September 17-25, announced that it would pay tribute to Julia Roberts for her career of films, from Pretty Woman and her Oscar-winning performance in Erin Brockovich to Eat Pray Love, co-starring Javier Bardem, released last weekend in the US. http://www.sansebastianfestival.com
The 6th Zurich Film Festival, September 23-October 3, will present its Golden Eye Award to director Milos Forman, who will also conduct a master class at the fest. The tribute to the 78-year-old filmmaker honors his body of work, such as One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Amadeus and Valmont.
