23 Jump Street/Men in Black crossover 'probably won't happen', says Jonah Hill

There was a profound beauty to the Jump Street series - movies which took the most idiotic remake idea in the world - rebooting the god-awful '90s TV teen drama starring Johnny Depp - and made it somehow utterly glorious.

Which is exactly why the bizarre news that the franchise would be crossing over with Men in Black was met with such overwhelming celebration. This was an idea even dumber than the original 21 Jump Street concept, which surely meant it was going to be the best thing ever to happen in the depths of the Hollywood franchise vaults.

Hold on to your hearts, however, as Jonah Hill has some pretty terrible news to deliver: the crossover project dream is pretty much over. Speaking to The Toronto Sun, the actor admitted, "I had the idea, but I doubt that movie will get made. It’s too complicated. They’re trying to make all the deals, but it’s kind of impossible with all the Men in Black stuff."

"The Jump Street films were so fun to make and the whole joke of them was they were making fun of remakes and sequels and reboots and then now it’s become a giant sequel, reboot. It’s almost become what we were making fun of and it’s hard to maintain that joke when it’s so high stakes."

That said, the project did manage to advance pretty far into development, at least to the point of attaching a director - The Muppets' James Bobin - and even acquiring a title, MIB 23. Plus, both are Sony franchises; this shouldn't technically be a deal as complicated as, say, the studio's Spider-Man deal with Marvel. So perhaps there's still a sliver of hope something can be sorted out.

Either way, Hill still has high hopes a 23 Jump Street sequel will happen in some form, crossover or not. "I love Channing and I love [directors] Phil Lord and Chris Miller and I love making those movies — they’re a lot of fun. So I hope it works out," the actor concluded.
