Neil Blomkamp and Sigourney Weaver aren’t the only ones making headlines with new revelations about the Alien series.

The first official picture from Prometheus sequel Alien: Covenant has been posted online, revealing very little about the film itself.

In the photo is a person's arm with a patch sewn on, featuring the word ‘Covenant’ written on what looks like the Arc of the Covenant.

Interestingly - as seen on the patch - the company Weyland Corp, seen in the first film, has undergone a merger with another company, Yutani, to form Weyland-Yutani. The company has previously appeared in the film Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem as well as various comic books set in the Alien universe.

In recent weeks, 20th Century Fox has released the film’s official plot synopsis: "Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in Alien with Alien: Covenant, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus - and connects directly to Scott's 1979 seminal work of science fiction.

"Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world - whose sole inhabitant is the 'synthetic' David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.”

Notably, Noomi Rapace's explorer Elizabeth Shaw is not mentioned although she was last seen alive in Prometheus.

The description also confirms there will be another film after Covenant, making up a full prequel trilogy linking directly to the original Alien.

The Bladerunner director also revealed there could possibly be three sequels to Prometheus. Alien: Covenant is set for release in the US on 4 August 2017.
