Anthony Hopkins posts uplifting New Year's message

Anthony Hopkins has posted an uplifting message to fans from his Twitter account to welcome the New Year.

The actor, who recently celebrated his 82nd birthday, said: “Happy New Year everyone, Niblo sends greetings to everyone all over the world, Happy, Happy New Year,” before blowing a kazoo.

Niblo is the name of Hopkins’ cat, who frequently appears with him in his social media posts.

Hopkins' most recent film, The Two Popes, is currently available to watch on Netflix after being released in cinemas in November.

In a review for The Independent, critic Clarisse Loughrey said Hopkins’ Pope Benedict XVI is “sharp and frosty” on the surface, “but peel back the veneer and there’s a real vulnerability to Benedict, which Hopkins deftly conveys”.

“Director Fernando Meirelles find his own way to shape the narrative,” she continued. “He cuts through the dreariness of Vatican City bureaucracy by condensing the papal conclave into a zippy, light-hearted montage. We’re guided through the election process by the clicking of ballpoint pens and the flutter of ballot papers being tossed into a pot.”
