Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo have teased Captain America’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

*Major spoilers follow – you have been warned*

The climax of their new blockbuster, which has scored the biggest global opening in film history, ended with Cap (Chris Evans) travelling back in time to return the Infinity Stones his superhero team collected so they could reverse Thanos’ destruction.

Instead of returning to the present, the character – real name Steve Rogers – decided to live a full life with his love Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) before coming back as an old man to give his vibranium shield to his friend, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).

Those thinking this was it for Evans in the MCU, though, may be mistaken. Instead, the Russo brothers – in an interview with Entertainment Weekly – have pointed out that Rogers’ return should pose more questions than it answers.

“If Cap were to go back into the past and live there, he would create a branched reality,“ Joe said, adding: ”The question then becomes, how is he back in this reality to give the shield away?”

He continued: “Interesting question, right? Maybe there’s a story there. There’s a lot of layers built into this movie and we spent three years thinking through it, so it’s fun to talk about it and hopefully fill in holes for people so they understand what we’re thinking.”

The directors also confirmed that Cap’s longtime friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) was aware of his decision to remain in the past before zapping him back.

Avengers: Endgame is in cinemas now
