Captain Marvel international trailer

It’s been revealed that one Marvel character was originally meant to die in Avengers: Endgame.

While the devastating deaths seen in Infinity War were reversed in the blockbuster sequel, Endgame proved fatal for two main characters – but it was almost three.

Concept art by Stephen Schirle makes the big revelation that Nick Fury – the character played by Samuel L Jackson – was supposed to meet his maker in the film.

Fury was set to be killed during a fight with Corvis Glaive, the villain played by Michael James Shaw.

If producers had proceeded with Fury’s death, Captain Marvel – in which he’s a main character alongside Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers – would have served as a swansong for the character.

Fury also appears in Spider-Man: Far From Home, although it’s revealed at the end that he is a shapeshifting Skrull and not the character we last saw at Tony Stark’s funeral.

One star who wouldn’t have been too fussed about Fury’s death is Gwyneth Paltrow. Marvel president Kevin Feige said last year that the Pepper Potts actor had no idea Jackson was a part of the MCU despite starring in numerous films with him.

Last year, Jackson picked his four favourite Marvel films for The Independent.

Next on the Marvel agenda is Black Widow, which will be released on 1 May.
