David Lynch has written an open letter to Donald Trump, clarifying recent comments made about the president.

Over the weekend, multiple publications picked up a Guardian interview with the filmmaker in which he said Trump “could go down as one of the greatest presidents in history because he has disrupted the thing so much. No one is able to counter this guy in an intelligent way.”

Alt-right publication Breitbart ran a news story on the quotes, Trump proceeding to Tweet out the report and later joking that Lynch’s Hollywood career was “officially over”.

However, the Twin Peaks creator – who supported Bernie Sanders during the American election primaries, later supporting Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson – has clarified the initial comments. Writing on Facebook, Lynch said the “quote which has traveled around was taken a bit out of context and would need some explaining.”

“Unfortunately, if you continue as you have been, you will not have a chance to go down in history as a great president,” he continues. ”This would be very sad it seems for you – and for the country. You are causing suffering and division.”

Lynch concludes the letter on an optimistic note, saying Trump has a chance to turn things around and could even “unite the country”.

“It’s not too late to turn the ship around,” he writes. “Point our ship toward a bright future for all. You can unite the country. Your soul will sing. Under great loving leadership, no one loses – everybody wins. It’s something I hope you think about and take to heart. All you need to do is treat all the people as you would like to be treated.”

The director was initially interviewed while promoting Room to Breath, a hybrid memoir/memoir that gives a look into Lynch’s life through himself, friends, and family. Meanwhile, Trump continues to make controversial policies, with 17 states recently moving to sue his administration over its family separation policies.
