It's been confirmed - Deathstroke is to be the main villain in the standalone Batman film which will be directed by its star Ben Affleck.

It was Affleck himself who sparked rumour that the character would be Bruce Wayne's chief nemesis in the upcoming film, but a casting announcement has made it official: Joe Manganiello will play the infamous assassin.

Manganiello is best known for his role of Richie in Magic Mike and its popular sequel Magic Mike XXL. Preceding that, the American actor played werewolf Alcide Herveaux in HBO series True Blood.

Created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez, Deathstroke - also known as Slade - first appeared in a comic in 1980 before meeting (and destroying) Batman in 1991 as part of the “City of Assassins” storyline.

Rumours of his appearance in the upcoming film began circulating after Arrow creator Marc Guggenheim explained that the character would not be returning to the TV series because he is “currently tied up in another DC project."

Deathstroke is also widely expected to cameo in superhero mashup Justice League which will be released 10 November 2017.
