Behold Leonardo DiCaprio speaking to the Pope in Italian

'DiCaprio to play famous Pope'. I could see it.

An A-lister known for his outrageous behaviour met Leonardo DiCaprio at the Vatican this week, with Pope Francis discussing the environment with the actor and philanthropist.

A video of the meeting has now emerged and it’s difficult to tell who is more starstruck - Leo bending to kiss the Pope’s hand and speaking to him in hushed tones in Italian as the Pontiff smiles and nods.

According to the Associated Press, DiCaprio said: “Your Holiness, thank you for granting me this private audience with you.”

The pair also talked art, with this year’s Leading Actor Oscar frontrunner showing Pope Francis ‘Garden of Earthly Delights’ by 15th century painter Hieronymus Bosch. He said of the triptych, which shows a bucolic vision of the world and a hellish one:

“As a child I didn’t quite understand what it all meant, but through my child’s eyes it represented a planet, the utopia we had been given, the overpopulation, excesses, and the third panel we see a blackened sky that represents so much to me of what’s going in in the environment.”

DiCaprio presented the Pope with a cheque last year intended for charities “close to your heart”.

Maybe Pope Francis will be next on DiCaprio’s biopic list? He has however expressed a desire to play several historical Russians first.

The actor has both Italian and Russian blood, and was named when he kicked in the womb in front of a Leonardo da Vinci painting.
