Bill Murray backs all-female Ghostbusters reboot, requesting Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy

Bill Murray has given his endorsement to a mooted all-female Ghostbusters reboot – and even offered his own casting suggestions.

The star of the original 1984 supernatural comedy responded enthusiastically to suggestions that the concept could be reborn as an all-female franchise. The actor proposed Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig as possible stars.

“It sounds great to me. It sounds as good as an idea as any other. There are a lot of women that could scare off any kind of vapour,” said Murray who has so far declined to sign up to a third film in the Ghostbusters series, planned for next year.

“Melissa would be a spectacular Ghostbuster. And Kristen Wiig is so funny – God, she’s funny!”, Murray told the Toronto Star.

He continued: “I like this girl Linda Cardinelli a lot. And Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there.”

Paul Feig, who directed McCarthy and Wiig in “Bridemaids” and Cardellini in the cult television series “Freaks and Geeks”, is believed to be in negotiations to helm the new Ghostbusters film.

“There were always going to be women involved in the next iteration of Ghostbusters,” said Ivan Reitman, director of the original film. “Paul seems to be the perfect director to sort of bring that about.”
