Captain America Civil War: Marvel 'committing' to Black Widow solo film

"We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a standalone franchise"

Turns out, Marvel might actually be listening to their fans.

After discussions on a Black Widow movie resurfaced when the Avenger topped a poll of potential spin-off flicks, Deadline put the question to the president of Marvel Studios himself, Kevin Feige.

It's been a long-rumoured project that Marvel has consistently dismissed as an idea that would be fantastic to do, but for which no concrete plans exist; yet Feige seems to have finally had a change of heart on the matter. On the matter of future solo movies down the line, Feig responded: "We’ve announced the next nine movies, ten counting Civil War, through the end of 2019. Where we go beyond that are ongoing discussions that we’ll focus on in the next few years because we have a lot to do before then."

"Of the characters that you’ve just mentioned, I would say certainly the one creatively and emotionally that we are most committing to doing is Black Widow. We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a standalone franchise."

Indeed, it seems almost foolish of Marvel not to be capitalising on such a steady, fan favourite character within their cinematic universe; one who's regularly been brought in to liven up the solo films of Iron Man and Captain America, but has yet to take centre spotlight herself. Feige's even got a potential directing duo already on board, with Civil War's Joe and Anthony Russo already expressing their enthusiasm for the character.

Though Feig's entirely right about Marvel's tight release schedule, space may have opened up after the studio dropped Inhumans from its 2018 release; though she'll be going up against another major Disney property, Indiana Jones 5, could it be that a Black Widow solo film could nestle in nicely within the year's releases?

We'll have to do with Black Widow's appearance in Captain America: Civil War for now, currently out in cinemas.
