When the bloated cast list for Captain America: Civil War was announced, one intriguing addition was Martin Freeman whose character's identity has remained a mystery for some time now.

Well, it's a mystery no more as the latest issue of Empire reveals all - the Bilbo Baggins actor will be playing Everett Ross.

The Marvel character is primarily a supporting player in the world of T'Challa / Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) who is set to make his debut appearance in Civil War ahead of his sole outing in July 2018.

Ross is a US State Department employee tasked with escorting foreign diplomats during their time in America - a situation that will directly tie into T'Challa's origin story.

As well as Freeman, starring in Civil War are regulars Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Anthony Mackie (The Falcon), Don Cheadle (War Machine) and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye). Newcomers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe include Emily VanCamp, Daniel Brühl and Tom Holland who will play the new incarnation of Spider-Man.

Mackie has inadvertently revealed that Mark Ruffalo's Hulk will also appear.

The film sees the Avengers' camaraderie fractured when Captain America himself, Steve Rodgers (Chris Evans) and Tony Stark (Robert Donwey, Jr) lock heads when world governments attempt to introduce an act that'll see superhero activity regulated. While Stark supports this notion, Cap resists and their fellow superheroes are forced to pick sides.

Captain America: Civil War is released on 29 April.
