Mark Ruffalo responds to posthumous Chadwick Boseman nomination at Golden Globes

Late actor’s co-star Viola Davis also earned a nod

Chadwick Boseman has earned a posthumous Golden Globes nomination for his last ever film performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

The actor, who died of cancer aged 43 last year, received a nod for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama on Wednesday (3 February).

Mark Ruffalo reacted to the news on Twitter, writing: “This is beautiful.”

Boseman portrays trumpet player Levee in the Netflix film. It is an adaptation of August Wilson’s 1982 play about blues singer Ma Rainey, who is played by Viola Davis in the movie.

Davis also scored a Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama nomination.

In a four-star review of the film for The Independent, critic Clarisse Loughrey wrote: “Boseman translates August Wilson’s words to screen with such force, it’s like he’s leapt outside of the screen to stand beside his audience.”

Netflix confirmed in October that it would be launching an Oscar campaign for Boseman.

The 78th annual Golden Globe Awards will be presented as a virtual event this year due to Covid-19. The event will take place on Sunday 28 February, with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey returning to host.

This year’s Globes nominations were met with bafflement by many, who questioned why derided shows such as Emily in Paris were recognised, while others like Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You were ignored completely.
