Chris Hemsworth has gone all Tom Hanks in Castaway on us and lost a ton of weight for upcoming movie In the Heart of the Sea.

The usually bulky Thor star shared a photo of himself looking skinny, beardy and seriously sunburnt. “Just tried a new diet/training program called ‘Lost at Sea’,” he wrote. “Wouldn’t recommend it.”

Directed by Ron Howard and based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s 2000 novel of the same name, the film follows Owen Chase and his shipmates as they battle to survive at sea for 90 days after a huge sperm whale destroys their ship Essex in 1820.

The true story was the inspiration behind Herman Melville classic Moby Dick and the cast had to look half-dead for most of shooting to convince audiences of the harrowing hell-on-earth experience that led them to cannibalism.

Hemsworth has revealed that himself and co-stars Tom Holland, Benjamin Walker and Cillian Murphy ate just 500 calories a day to get in character.

“We kind of went insane, weighing ourselves every day. We all felt like a bunch of supermodels, trying to get down in weight for a show, or something,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

“That’s all we spoke about. You’ve got 15 burly blokes on the sea and all we talked about was our diet and who’d lost more weight and who’s looking really skinny. It’s ridiculous!”
