Christopher Nolan ‘doesn’t allow chairs’ on his film sets, says Anne Hathaway

Actor, who worked with the director on The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar, thinks he’s ‘onto something’

Anne Hathaway has revealed that filmmaker Christopher Nolan “doesn’t allow chairs” on the sets of his films.

Talking to Hugh Jackman as part of Variety‘s “Actors on Actors” series, the Rachel’s Getting Married star said: “[Nolan’s] reasoning is, if you have chairs, people will sit, and if they’re sitting, they’re not working.”

Hathaway has previously worked with the director on The Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar.

“He has these incredible movies in terms of scope and ambition and technical prowess and emotion,” she added. “It always arrives at the end under schedule and under budget. I think he’s onto something with the chair thing.”

Jackman also noted that Nolan is one of many directors to enforce a rule forbidding the use of mobile phones on-set.

Nolan’s new film Tenet, a sci-fi blockbuster starring John David Washington, Elizabeth Debicki and Robert Pattinson, is set to be released in cinemas on 12 August.

Despite the director’s stringent productivity-based rules, Hathaway noted that Nolan was one of her favourite filmmakers to have collaborated with.

“I’m such a director nerd,” she said. ”I love just seeking out the best directors I can and then just watching them.”

“Chris’ whole approach to filmmaking is one of my favourite ones. He’s broken it down to its most minimal, but also his movies are just so huge and ornate.”
