Dawn of the Planet of the Apes trailer sees humans pitted against primates

The eagerly anticipated film shows the world decimated as humans try to survive following the spread of a deadly virus

A new trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has been released, showing man versus ape in an epic battle for survival.

The new instalment stars Gary Oldman, Andy Serkis and Keri Russell and features shots of an apocalyptic North America.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes picks up from the events of the last film. In the new trailer, simian flu has wreaked havoc on humans, creating mistrust between the apes and humans.

Oldman appears as the vengeful Dreyfus, who will stop at nothing to conquer the Earth, while Serkis reprises his role as the super-smart primate Caesar.

This film is a sequel to 2011’s The Rise of the Planet of the Apes, starring James Franco and Freida Pinto, and saw scientists accidentally creating advanced primates and spreading a virus fatal to humans.

The film is loosely based on the 1972 film Conquest of the Planet of the Apes but it is not a remake of the film.

The latest trailer was uploaded to YouTube on Thursday 8 May and has garnered over 5 million views since then.

The new film will continue to franchise, which was rebooted with The Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

The franchise first stated in 1968 with Planet of the Apes and starred Charlton Heston and Roddy MacDowell.

There are eight films, two television series and numerous comic books and novels all together.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be released in July.
