Following the unprecedented global success of the Ryan Reynolds-starring film Deadpool - which became the highest grossing R-rated release of all time when it was released earlier this year - work on a sequel is already underway.

What with his appearance being teased in a post-credits scene, it's no secret that comic book character Cable will be appearing in Deadpool 2.

There is still no actor in place to play the time-travelling mutant - however, producers do reportedly have one person in mind: Kyle Chandler.

ComicBook.com reports that Mashable's Jeff Sneider told Meet the Movie Press: “There’s been a name floating around for Cable for months. Hasn’t changed. Don’t know if it’s changed. Didn’t make any calls about this. This was just the name that has been out there for months. So take this with a gigantic grain of salt. The biggest grain of salt your tiny little brain can imagine. The name that is floating around for Cable right now is Kyle Chandler.”

Perhaps best known for his Emmy award-winning role of Coach Eric Taylor in Friday Night Lights as well as Netflix series Bloodline (for which he recently received another Emmy nomination), Chandler's list of big-screen credits includes The Wolf of Wall Street, Carol and upcoming drama Manchester by the Sea.

Speaking about the character, co-screenwriter Rhett Reese commented: “There's a lot of fun in that he's very serious and he does take on more serious weighty issues than Deadpool's used to taking on so I think there's a juxtaposition there that can be fun."

Sneider also confirmed that Mackenzie Davis - who appears in The Martian and TV series Halt and Catch Fire - is being eyed to play Domino who is said to be the sequel's "scene-stealer."

Deadpool 2 goes into production next year.
