Deadpool 2: post-credits scene confirms one highly rumoured sequel character

Though post-credits sequences are notorious for sequel revelations, Deadpool's is done in the only way he knows how.

Everyone knows post-credits sequences are the place for flashy reveals; of team-ups, villain reveals, new paths and surprises.

Deadpool, of course, has a post-credit sequence and, because its Deadpool, it's not in the usual style. The Merc with a Mouth actually had two scenes hidden up his sleeve for the occasion: the first screened during previews and press screenings; the second, carefully hidden until the day of release. And for good reason.

*CAUTION: CONTENT OF POST CREDITS SEQUENCES REVEALED *

The first sequence brilliantly plays off one of the most iconic post-credits scenes of all time, the old 'go home' bit from Ferris Bueller's Day off. Yes, bathrobe included. There's an addendum in the theatrical release, however, which sees Mr. Pool continue with a highly desirable morsel of gossip for the now-confirmed sequel (via CinemaBlend); "Oh! I can tell you one thing, and it’s a bit of a secret. The sequel? We’re gonna have Cable. Amazing character. Bionic arm, time travel!"

"We have no idea who we’re going to cast yet, but it could be anyone. Just need a big guy with a flat top. Mel Gibson, Dolph Lundgren, Kiera Knightley? She’s got range – who knows? Big secret, shhh. Oh, and don’t leave your garbage all lying around. It’s a total dick move. Go! Chica-chica!"

Rumours of the character's appearance have long been flying around, especially since Reynolds' highly suggestive him at a recent fan event, yet this is presumably confirmation those rumours are true. Unless Deadpool's just messing with us. It did seem like an inevitability, however, in light of the pair's lengthy history together in the Cable & Deadpool comics series.

In the comics, Cable is son to X-Men members Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor (clone of Jean Grey). A time-traveler, the soldier uses his knowledge of the future to fuel his ongoing efforts to ensure a better present.

The future-knowledge element is certainly a difficult element to bring into the already vastly complex timeline of the X-Men universe, but considering the very concept of the fourth-wall breaking hero seemed near impossible when first greenlit, it's clear this franchise is in the business of conquering cinematic challenges.

Deadpool is out now.
