Disney breaks $7bn global box office record with Rogue One: Star Wars

With thanks to Civil War, Finding Dory, and Zootopia

Last year saw an impressive number of box-office records broken by Disney’s phenomenally popular Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

However, without the same fanfare surrounding Rogue One - which still made almost $300 million during its opening weekend - there were questions over whether Disney would ever be able to reach those same heights again.

The Mouse, though, has broken new ground, this time thanks to an accumulation of films, as Disney has become the first film studio to ever take $7 billion in global tickets sales in a single year.

Previously, the record holder for most annual ticket sales was Universal, who grossed $6.9 billion last year, thanks to Jurassic World and Furious 7.

Disney’s big hitters from the last year include Captain America: Civil War, Finding Dory, Zootopia, and The Jungle Book, the four films making up the top overall grossing films of the year.

With Rogue One playing in cinemas over the Christmas period, Disney looks set to finish the year closer to $8 billion than seven.

The Mouse look set for another stellar year in 2018, with releases including Cars 3, Star Wars Episode 8, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
