From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Your support makes all the difference. The salaries of Hollywood's biggest stars for 2018 were revealed today, with Daniel Craig, Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence taking home the biggest fees for their movies.
Beyond the usual rankings and gender disparities, the list also throws up a few interesting nuggets on exactly what the stars are being paid for.
In particular, this from Variety stood out:
'Want access to Johnson’s 104 million Instagram followers? It’s going to cost you. The Rampage star is asking for a $1 million social-media fee as part of his package for the upcoming Red Notice; that includes promoting the film on the likes of Twitter and Facebook.'
On the face of it this seems a crazy amount of money to spend on a few tweets and Instagram photos, but when you think that there are more Instagram followers of The Rock than there are people in Canada and the United Kingdom combined, one million is arguably a steal for unfettered access to his legion of potential customers.
Though Daniel Craig will take home the biggest lump sum this year for returning as James Bond, Dwayne Johnson will likely be 2018's highest paid actor due to the volume of movies he cranks out.
