Emily Blunt has revealed that a nude scene planned for her latest film Sicario was pulled because “her tits didn’t agree with it”.

The English-US actress plays an FBI agent enlisted to fight the war against drugs at the Mexican border, and was not impressed when her kick-ass character was asked to strip off.

“It was in there originally but it came out because we didn’t agree with it,” she told interviewer Howard Stern, clarifying that “we” meant “my tits”.

Blunt’s opinion was upheld by co-star Benicio Del Toro, who was due to feature in the scene with her but didn’t believe it necessary.

Director Denis Villeneuve, who has a reputation for putting women at the centre of his movies, was advised to have Blunt’s role rewritten for a man but refused.

“There are not good parts for women in movies these days,” he told The Independent earlier this month. “[This is] my contribution, I think.”

Blunt's refusal to shoot the nude scene suggests agreement with actress Jessica Chastain, who recently criticised studios for “trying to make kick-ass women sexualised”, while last month George Clooney called for roles meant for men to be rejigged so that women could play them.

Sicario arrives in UK cinemas on 8 October.
