Netflix has announced a Father of the Bride reunion will be airing this Friday (25 September).

The streaming giant posted a short clip to its social media accounts publicising the event, with the caption: “Something is coming."

The brief video appears to be a screen recording of George Banks – famously portrayed by Steve Martin – opening an email from his son Matty Banks (Kieran Culkin) inviting him to a video call.

It is likely the reunion special will take the form of a socially distanced video call between the film’s cast members. However, there have been no further details given on whether the reunion will be scripted or improvised, nor whether it will be pre-recorded or live.

It’s not known which members of the original cast will appear, although given that the email in the video is addressed to Martin’s character and sent from Culkin’s, it is safe to assume that the comedian and Succession star will both be in attendance.

Netflix’s official announcement comes shortly after Father of the Bride producer Nancy Meyers teased the project two weeks ago.

Meyers shared a photo of the iconic film to Instagram, accompanied with the caption: “If he [Martin] thought a weeding was a lot, how would he react to 2020? Coming soon to the phone in your hand!”

The reunion special will benefit World Central Kitchen, a charity which aims to provide meals in the wake of crises, including natural disasters and the coronavirus pandemic.

The beloved 1991 family comedy starred Martin as the titular father of the bride, opposite Diane Keaton. A sequel was released in 1995.

The Father of the Bride reunion special will be available to watch on Netflix, YouTube and Facebook at 11.00 BST on Friday, 25 September.
