The first clip from upcoming erotic movie Fifty Shades of Grey has finally dropped, showing Anastasia Steele meeting Christian Grey in her hardware shop.

Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson star as the playboy billionaire and his infatuated student submissive in Sam Taylor-Johnson's film adaptation of EL James' racy novels.

In this sneak peek scene, Christian is keen to buy some rope and masking tape from "Miss Steele", no doubt for later use in his Red Room.

Ana is yet to be introduced to Mr Grey's "singular" tastes, and innocently thinks he is wanting to do some home decorating. Oh what a surprise she is in for.

"Rope, tape, cable tyres, you're the complete serial killer," she jokes. "Not today," he replies, a knowing smirk on his face.

The movie has been given an 18 certificate in the UK after the British Board of Film Classification deemed "the portrayal of erotic role play based on domination, submission and sado-masochistic practices" inappropriate for younger audiences.

Dornan has defended the film against critics condoning it for allegedly glamourising violence against women.

"It's all consensual," he told GQ. "There's weirder s**t than [S&M]. I think plane spotting is far weirder than S&M. That I really don’t get. I can understand why people are into S&M but standing outside Heathrow Terminal 5 waiting for Ryanair to come in?"

Fifty Shades of Grey hits UK cinemas on 13 February.
