The first footage of Andre 3000 as Jimi Hendrix has surfaced on YouTube, not a trailer but a one-minute clip from All Is By My Side seeing the legendary guitarist being discovered by Imogen Poots' Linda Keith.

Filmmakers have been trying to bring Hendrix to the big screen for years, with Oscar-winning 12 Years A Slave screenwriter John Ridley finally succeeding where Paul Greengrass and the Hughes brothers failed.

The Hendrix estate didn't give its support to the film, which therefore faces the considerable setback of not being able to use any of his music, focusing more on sex and drugs than rock 'n' roll.

This first look sees Hendrix having a heart-to-heart with Linda Keith, discussing how both Jimi and Keith Richards had written songs for her.

"I've got all these men writing songs for me, then I go home and I listen to them alone," she admits.

"What is it with you rock and rollers, you can perform for a thousand people but you can't be honest with one?"

Hayley Atwell, Ruth Negga and Adrian Lester also star in the film, which focuses on the musician's life between 1966 and 1967 when he found fame.

"Jimmy James, an unknown backup guitarist, left New York City for London, England in 1966," the official synopsis reads. "A year later he returned - as Jimi Hendrix."

"All Is By My Side brings authenticity and poignancy to the story of the man behind the legend, and of the people who loved and inspired him."

All Is By My Side does not yet have a release date, but will make its debut at SXSW on 12 March.
