George Clooney has been injured in a crash involving his scooter and a car in Sardinia.

The Hollywood str was taken to hospital after having an accident while riding his scooter on the Italian island.

His injuries are not serious but he was taken to the nearby John Paul II hospital's emergency room local newspaper La Nuova Sardegna, reported, adding that the 57-year-old was heading to a film set on Tuesday when his motorbike was hit by a car.

The publication shared a photo of the purported accident site on social media.

The incident is thought to have taken place at around 8am local time as he was leaving his hotel in Costa Corallina in the north of the island.

The hospital told US broadcaster NBC News that the Oscar-winning actor was discharged within hours of the accident.

The actor is in Sardinia to film his latest TV series Catch 22 which sees him play US Air Force commander Scheisskopf in the World War II Channel 4 drama based on Joseph Heller's novel of the same name.

The upcoming six-part drama is set to air in 2019.

Clooney has a home on Lake Como which is on the Italian mainland.
