Fans of The Godfather will be saddened to hear of the death of actor Alex Rocco, who played Las Vegas casino boss Moe Greene in the 1972 mafia movie.

Rocco, known for his deep, gravelly voice, died aged 79 on Saturday.

Despite a five decade-long career in both film and TV, Rocco was arguably most famous for playing Moe, a role he described as "without a doubt, my biggest ticket anywhere".

Mob drama The Godfather, based on the book by Mario Puzo, has iconic status and is still widely regarded as one of the best films of all-time.

The movie follows the violent life of Don Vito Corleone's Italian-American crime family and won three Oscars, including Best Actor for Marlon Brando.

While the film world pays tribute to Rocco, we felt it an apt time to remember some of The Godfather's most-loved quotes:

"You son of a b***h, do you know who I am? I'm Moe Greene! I made my bones when you were going out with cheerleaders." - Moe Greene

"I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse" - Don Corleone

"Leave the fun. Take the cannoli." - Peter Clemenza

Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather

"A man who doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man." - Don Corleone

"In Sicily, women are more dangerous than shotguns" - Calo

"Never hate your enemies. It affects your judgement." - Michael Corleone

"I got a business to run. I gotta kick asses sometimes to make it run right. We had a little argument, Freddy and me, so I had to straighten him out." - Moe Greene

"Fredo, you're my older brother and I love you. But don't ever take sides with anyone against the Family again. Ever." - Michael Corleone

"You talk about vengeance. Is vengeance going to bring your son back to you? Or my boy to me? - Don Corleone

"Just lie here, Pop. I'll take care of you now. I'm with you now. I'm with you." - Michael Corleone
