Whether every member of the Guardians of the Galaxy will survive the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War remains to be seen. However, we can still expect the rag-tag bunch of a-holes to return after Thanos’s attack on the universe.

On Twitter, the director of Volume One and Two, James Gunn — who will also helm the third movie — announced the next instalment’s release date.

“Coming in 2020,” Gunn simply wrote on Twitter, confirming much speculation.

The director has remained vague about the upcoming movie, likely to contain spoilers about Infinity War and the unnamed fourth Avengers film.

Speaking to The Independent last year, Gunn commented on whether the other group of Guardians — including Sylvester Stallone's Stakar, Michelle Yeoh's Aleta, Ving Rhames's Charlie-27, and Mainframe, who is voiced by Miley Cyrus — would appear in Vol. 3.

"I would love to see those characters reappear in the future," he said. "Where exactly they will be, whether it is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or their own movie, or someone else's movie, we’ll have to wait and see. I think I have most of the answers now but we’ll have to completely figure it out in a little bit.”

Catch the Guardians of the Galaxy in Infinity War, in cinemas 27 April 2018.
