From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Actor Hugh Grant reprised his role as Paddington 2’s Phoenix Buchanan as part of a charity fundraising video.

The Notting Hill star took part in the challenge for Solving Kids Cancer in honour of four-year-old cancer patient Henry, who is a huge fan of the children’s film.

With the challenge asking social media users to share pictures eating jam or marmalade sandwiches ahead of Henry’s 5th birthday on 23 May, Grant shared his own version as his Paddington 2 character, Phoenix.

“If your birthday is a special birthday, why not celebrate in style with Buchanan’s special chunky-cut marmalade? More taste, more goodness, more, dare one say, class,” the actor said, before smearing the food over his face with his hands.

Still in character, Grant then asked: “How was that darling? Was it good? Shall we go again? Bit messy?”

In response, the official Paddington Bear Twitter wrote back: “Please make sure you wash your paws afterwards, Mr Buchanan, as otherwise you’ll end up in another rather sticky situation.”

Grant had previously reprised his Paddington 2 role in April in another video for cancer patient Henry, after he was sent a video of the little boy dancing to Phoenix Buchanan’s dance to “Rain on the Roof” from Follies that features at the end of the 2017 film.
