Spanish film-maker Pedro Almodovar has revealed he is a keen flyer in spite of the problems featured in his new film I'm So Excited!

The latest farcical comedy from the 63-year-old follows the crew and passengers on a disastrous aeroplane flight as it makes its way to Mexico, following a technical fault with the landing gears.

"I'm really scared about the speed but more in a car. In a plane, I feel completely calm," he said at the film's gala screening at the Hackney Picturehouse in east London.

"I can concentrate very much - I write and read a lot so it is a very comfortable place for me. I'm a boring companion because I don't talk. But I don't have any fears (about flying). All the flights I have been on have been boring."

The film is a return to Almodovar's early comedies and his first in over 13 years following thrillers The Skin I Live In and Broken Embraces and mystery drama Bad Education.

"I wanted to go back to comedy but I didn't just want to make one because I know how to. But I'm very happy with this," he said.

Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas, who have previously starred in Almodovar's films, make a cameo appearance in I'm So Excited!, which the director-writer said is a metaphor for those living in Spain at the moment.

"Going around in circles without knowing when you're going to land, making emergency landings and living with a sense of uncertainty and fear reflects the situation in Spain," he explained.

"This is a comedy so everything ends well."

I'm So Excited! opens in cinemas on May 3.
