Let’s all be honest with ourselves: we’re very, very thankful Disney decided not to let George Lucas direct Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the man isn’t a genius - he is, after all, the person who created the Star Wars universe and helped create Indiana Jones - but he did direct the awful prequel trilogy…

One of the worst things to come out of those films was Jar Jar Binks. The Gungan was, and still is, a joke amongst Star Wars fans, with pages devoted to fan theories about him being a Sith Lord, and JJ Abrams saying he may kill Jar Jar in the upcoming film.

Yet, it turns out George Lucas still has a soft spot for the floppy-eared being, telling Variety that, while he “likes all the characters” in the Star Wars universe, if he could be just one it would be Jar Jar Binks.

He goes on to give advice to Abrams, saying there’s “more to it than just space ships”, adding how he is curious what happened to Darth Vader’s Grandchildren. Watch below.

Lucas then says he will go back to directing, but “not movies anyone will be seeing”. Instead, he wants to return to more experimental cinema.

It was recently confirmed that Disney will keep releasing Star Wars films until ‘people no longer buy the cinema tickets’. There are currently six Star Wars films confirmed for the next six years, including episodes VII, VIII, IX, Rogue One and an untitled Han Solo film.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens reaches cinemas 18 December.
