Interstellar called the most overrated film of 2014 by Metacritic users

According to the apparently very conflicted users of review aggregator Metacritic, Boyhood and Interstellar are both the best and most overrated films released of the past year.

Richard Linklater's pain-staking coming of age drama currently has a perfect score of 100 from the critics, is a frontrunner for the Best Picture Oscar and topped the user vote, and yet some think the acclaim goes a little too far, it being voted the second most overrated movie by users.

Interstellar meanwhile was a hit with cinema-goers, less so with critics (it's Metacritic rating standing at 74) and was declared the most overrated film by users, perhaps because people felt that Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey were revered by default. You're just supposed to believe in their current apotheosis.

Users found Grand Budapest Hotel's acclaim well-deserved meanwhile, but thought people made too much of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Director David Cronenberg criticised sites like Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes for blurring the line between film criticism and public opinion this week, saying: "I think the role of the critic has been very diminished, because you get a lot of people who set themselves up as critics by having a website where it says that they’re a critic."
