Those concerned about Johnny Depp’s recent box office flops needn't worry, the actor will not be vanishing from our screens quite yet.

Instead he will be vanishing on the big screen, as Depp is reported to be in talks to play Harry Houdini in the forthcoming film The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film’s story recasts Houdini as an investigator of the world of the occult as well as a master escape artist.

Depp has recently starred in two box office disappointments, Transcendence and The Lone Ranger, leading critics to speculate whether his career as an A-list movie star is over.

But the 50-year-old is set to return in two popular blockbuster franchises, Pirates of the Caribbean and Alice in Wonderland, in the next year.

The actor is also confirmed to star as notorious organised crime gang member Whitey Bulger in the forthcoming thriller Black Mass, due to be released in 2015.

Benedict Cumberbatch is due to star alongside the actor as his goody two-shoes brother Billy Bulger, who goes on to become a US Senator.
