Labyrinth: Marvel director Scott Derrickson signs up to work on David Bowie sequel

The sequel to Labyrinth, the 1986 fantasy film starring David Bowie, is set to move ahead with Marvel director Scott Derrickson at the helm.

As reported by Deadline, Derrickson, who is best known for working with Benedict Cumberbatch on 2016’s Doctor Strange, has been brought on by TriStar Pictures to direct the sequel, while Into the Dark creator Maggie Levin will write the script.

The Jim Henson Company, who worked on and provided puppets for the original film, are also involved in the new project, with Lisa Henson producing and Brian Henson executive producing.

The original Labyrinth starred Jennifer Connelly as a young girl trying to rescue her baby brother from the Goblin King, played by Bowie.

Over the years, the film has achieved cult status, with reports of a new film first emerging mere weeks after Bowie’s death in 2016.

However, rumours that the film would be a simple reboot were shot down by the first screenwriter linked to the project, Nicole Perlman, who told Twitter: “Guys, please don’t fall for all the clickbait. No one is remaking Labyrinth. That movie is perfect as it is.”
