Citizen Kane, All About Eve, Singing’ in the Rain, North by Northwest, M, Seven Samurai, and Twelve Angry Men — all classic movies that hold the ever-coveted titled of 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

For many years. there’s been one film above the rest: Toy Story 2. The 1999 sequel is the most-reviewed movie on the aggregate website which still holds the 100% rating.

However, the animated classic has been unseated. Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird — currently playing in US cinemas — has overtaken Toy Story’s 163 glowing reviews, the coming-of-age flick landing (so far) 170 positive write-ups.

“We put our heart and souls into this movie, and the last step of this deeply collaborative art form of filmmaking is giving the film to the audience and the film critics,” Gerwig said of the news.

“That there has been such a warm reception is a dream come true. Thank you to everyone who has seen the film and has written about it so thoughtfully. We are all on cloud nine and using our tomato emoji more than we ever thought possible.”

Of course, Lady Bird could be unseated at any moment: with the movie coming to the UK next year and critics soon to start posting their reviews, one bad piece could ruin an otherwise perfect score. Considering the response so far, though, that looks unlikely.
