Reese Witherspoon has confirmed on Twitter that she'll be reprising the role of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde 3 with MGM.

The Big Little Lies actress wrote, "It's true... #LegallyBlonde3," alongside a photo of her floating in a pool in a pink bikini, which pays homage to a scene in the original film.

MGM also tweeted to confirm that the film would be released on Valentine's Day in 2020.

The news comes 17 years after the first movie and 15 years following the film's sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red White & Blonde.

Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith and Karen McCullah who first made the film adaptation from the Amanda Brown novel are in final negotiations to pen the script, reports Deadline.

Smith and McCullah have worked on comedies including 10 Things I Hate About You and The House Bunny, with credits on She’s the Man and The Ugly Truth.

Legally Blonde's original producer Marc Platt will be joined by his Platt Productions president Adam Siegel for the newest film, but will also team up with Witherspoon to produce under her company Hello Sunshine.

Once a deal is set in place, the writers will immediately begin the script.

A director has yet to be secured for the forthcoming picture, however Robert Luketic spearheaded the original movie.

The Legally Blonde franchise has been a cult-favourite film for nearly two decades; it even became a hit musical in 2008.

The original movie earned $141m worldwide and the sequel made $124m at the box office.

Legally Blonde chronicled Woods' journey from California sorority president to an underdog at Harvard Law School.

The 2003 sequel saw Woods move to D.C. to help a congresswoman pass a bill to ban animal testing.
