Leonardo DiCaprio one step closer to an Oscar after winning at Screen Actors Guild Awards for The Revenant

2016 looks set to be Leonardo DiCaprio’s year. After being nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award eight times previously without success - both as lead actor and as ensemble cast - the actor has finally picked up one of the prestigious trophies.

The 42-year-old picked up the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor at the 22nd annual SAG Awards ceremony for his lead role in The Revenant.

“I'm truly humbled by this because it comes from all of you, my fellow actors,” he said in his speech. “Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.”

He went on to tell young actors to “watch the history of cinema” as he did as a young lad because “as the history of cinema unfolds you realise that we all stand on the shoulders of giants.”

DiCaprio also thanked all those who worked on The Revenant, which tells the story of Hugh Glass’s attempting to get revenge for the murder of his son.

For his performance - which saw the actor eat raw bison, go swimming in freezing cold lakes and sleep in a horse's carcass - DiCaprio is nominated for an Oscar.

As has been pointed out on numerous occasions, he has yet to win an Oscar, but this year it looks very likely having won at both the Screen Actors Guild and the Golden Globes.

DiCaprio recently made headlines for saying he would one day like to play Putin or Lenin in a film. LeninFilm has since offered him the chance to star as the latter Russian revolutionary.
