The UK trailer for screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s much-awaited directorial debut Molly’s Game has just been released. Telling the true story of “poker princess” Molly Bloom, Jessica Chastain promises a suitably Oscar-friendly performance in the upcoming movie.

Lauded for his work on Moneyball, West Wing and the Academy Award-winning script for David Fincher’s The Social Network, Sorkin is discovering new ground on his first project as director.

From cocktail waitress to queen of the most exclusive high-stakes poker empire in the world, 26-year-old Molly Bloom became the target of an FBI investigation of epic proportions. Molly’s Game is based on Bloom’s memoir, Molly's Game: From Hollywood's Elite to Wall Street's Billionaire Boys Club, My High-Stakes Adventure in the World of Underground Poker.

“I saw her as a very unique movie heroine, and thought there was an interesting way to tell her story”, Sorkin previously told Entertainment Weekly. “God knows I was scared going into it. But I felt like there was a chance I could be good at it. I don’t mean good at directing, I mean good at directing this movie”.

The latest trailer features the level of cutting, dry dialogue that you’d expect from a Sorkin script, as well as a promising dynamic from an explosive cast. Chastain is joined by Michael Cera, Kevin Costner and Idris Elba, the latter playing Bloom’s only ally in the ongoing investigation, her lawyer Charlie Jaffey.

Molly’s Game is released in the UK on 26 December.
