Mother! Official Trailer

What is happening in this house?

The grand mystery of Darren Aronofsky's Mother! continues with the first trailer for the film, which answers so little but leaves the door open for so many terrors to unfold.

Written by Aronofsky, the film is known to focus on a couple (Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem) whose quaint existence is interrupted by the arrival of several uninvited guests.

There are secrets abound in this home, as Lawrence's character seemingly becomes fixated on a patched up wall in the basement, and what it's hiding behind it.

A tunnel? And where is all the blood coming from? Perhaps, more importantly, whose blood is it?

Mother! certainly seems to be paying its dues to traditional horror structures, but knowing how Aronofsky has played with the genre in the past - with Requiem for a Dream or Black Swan - be prepared to expect the entirely unexpected.

Both Lawrence and Bardem are joined here by the likes of Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Harris, Domhnall Gleeson, and Kristen Wiig.

Mother! hits UK cinemas 15 September.
