Donnie Yen – best known to Westerners for playing the blind, Force-guided warrior Chirrut Îmwe in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – has landed another major role.

The Hong Kong actor will next appear in the Disney-produced live-action remake of Mulan, Yen playing the titular character’s mentor Commander Tung according to Deadline.

Niki Caro – of Whale Rider and The Zookeeper’s Wife fame – will direct the upcoming blockbuster, while Yifei Liu has been cast as Mulan.

Influential producer Bill Kong will act as executive producer, having previously worked on various hits, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero, and Monster Hunt.

Yen may have come to international fame with Rogue One, but the actor has been a mega-star in China for many years having headlined the Ip Man trilogy (a fourth instalment has since been announced).

Meanwhile, Disney continues to release live-action remakes of their classic animated movies, with Aladdin, Dumbo, and The Lion King all coming soon.

Mulan reaches cinemas in 2020.
