Netflix has built up a strong repertoire over the past few years comprised of stellar TV shows (Mindhunter) and Oscar-contending films (Dee Rees' standout Mudbound). Perhaps proving it has something for everyone, the streaming service has added a brand new Christmas film that many are simultaneously branding the best and the worst film they've ever seen.
The film in question is A Christmas Prince, a festive tale following a young journalist named Amber who's sent to the fictional town of Aldovia to get the scoop on a local playboy prince poised to become king - a plot perfectly summed up by the tagline: “Royalty. Romance. And a really handsome prince. He's her most important assignment to date.”
Rose McIver - best known as the lead star of teen drama iZombie - stars as Amber alongside British actor Ben Lamb who assumes the role of Prince Richard in a Hallmark-style tale involving a zany set-piece involving wolves, vases and all the snow-frolicking you'd expect.
Netflix users have expressed their varying emotions regarding the film on Twitter, the consensus being relief that the film exists.
Will it sit alongside festive classics It's a Wonderful Life, Home Alone and The Muppet Christmas Carol? Well, no - but not everything has to be. One thing's for sure - it certainly seems like Netflix have caught on to something so expect many more Hallmark-style treats in time for Christmas 2018.
