Reshoots on the troubled X-Men spin-off The New Mutants didn’t happen, its director has claimed, despite rumours that the entire movie had to be overhauled.

Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy and Charlie Heaton star in the film, which has been described as a horror movie set in an institution for young people with mutant abilities.

The film has been plagued by negative press since it was shot, with production completed in 2017 and its release date repeatedly delayed.

There were also rumours that Disney, which adopted the film in its merger with 20th Century Fox, was unhappy with it to such an extent that significant reshoots were requested.

Director Josh Boone has now denied the reshoot rumours, telling Entertainment Weekly that they never happened.

“Everybody said we did reshoots! We’ve never done reshoots,” Boone said. “And I’ll tell you this: if there hadn’t been a merger, I’m sure we would’ve done reshoots the same way every movie does pickups.

“We didn’t even do that because by the time the merger was done and everything was settled, everybody’s older.”

Boone also said that he had to pause work on the film for a year while Disney decided how it would handle the films already completed by Fox prior to their merger. When he returned to The New Mutants, it was decided that nothing should change from its original form.

Williams added: “I was nervous when they were talking about reshooting or re-editing that it was gonna be very different, but honestly, it’s exactly what we set out to do.”

The New Mutants will finally be released in UK cinemas on 10 April.
