No Time to Die director Cary Fukunaga has confirmed he tried to “woo” former Bond girl Grace Jones to return to the franchise, months after reports claimed she had stormed off the set.

Fukunaga said that he spent time with Jones in her native Jamaica shortly before filming began, though did not confirm whether he wanted her to play the same role she played in 1985’s A View to a Kill.

“I took a snorkelling trip with Grace Jones out in the waters in front of Ian Fleming’s house when I was trying to woo her into being in the film,” the filmmaker told Total Film.

In July, reports claimed that Jones had signed on to appear in No Time to Die and even arrived on set to shoot a scene with Daniel Craig. However, she was allegedly shocked to discover she had few lines in the film, and abruptly fled the set.

Jones’s representative told The Independent at the time that the singer, actor and supermodel had “no comment” on the story.

Rumours of her involvement in the film stemmed from an Instagram photo published by Jones of a beach in Jamaica, around the time the No Time to Die crew were shooting scenes on the island.

“Exciting news coming soon,” Jones wrote.

Jones previously starred alongside Roger Moore in A View to a Kill as Mayday – a henchwoman for Christopher Walken’s Max Zorin. After falling in love with 007, she appeared to die in an explosion.

Jones’ acting career also included roles in the Eddie Murphy romcom Boomerang and the Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle Conan the Destroyer.
